William Sowerby was born in Lancashire, England.

Although no birth or baptismal records found, family records indicate William was born in Preston, Lancashire, England, in 1829. He was enumerated in the 1841 census ^[1] as a twelve year old residing with his family in Preston. In 1851, ^[2] he was living on Upper Lawson Street, Preston. He stated he was twenty two, single, and a "Slater".

William married Ellen Gray in 1857.^[3] The marriage was performed on October 18th, in Preston, at St John.^[4] (Note...entry for spouse as "Townley" is incorrect on spouse's profile). The couple would have at least two children, Thomas in 1858, and Mary Ann in 1863. William was enumerated in the 1861 ^[5] and 1871 census ^[6] residing with his family in Preston. He stated his occupation as "Flagger" or "Slater".

William passed away on March 26, 1879.^[7]
