The Late Lady Manning
The death took place recently at Collins-avenue, Rose Bay, of Lady Manning, widow of the late Sir William Montague Manning, K.C.M.G., who was a Judge in Equity in Sydney, and a chancellor of the Sydney University. Lady Manning was the daughter of the late Very Rev. Dean Sowerby, of Goulburn, who came to New South Wales about the year 1837. Dean Sowerby had two daughters, the late Mrs. Rossi, and the late Lady Manning, and when he came to New South Wales, in 1837, he left his children at school among the Cumberland fells, and strangely it was at the school mentioned in "Jane Eyre," the novel of the Cumberland girl, Charlotte Bronte, that the little Miss Sowerbys were placed as boarders. The late Lady Manning was in her 86th year at the time of her death. Those who knew her can testify of the nobility of her entire life, an example in every way to those in high places. She practically pioneered the Women's College into existence. The deceased was also one of the original founders of the Young Women's Christian Association. As the wife of Judge Manning, she had many public and official duties to perform, and was in her day connexted with may reform movements.[5] |
