Are you a Montgomery wondering if you descend from Robert Montgomery, the earliest known member of Clan Montgomery[1] of Scotland? A big Y test from Family Tree DNA for men or an autosomal test for men and women related through their non-paternal line could answer the question.

Dating and Founder: Haplogroup J-Z35794 is dated ~ 600 CE with a 99% Confidence level the founder was born between 138-958 CE.[2] DNA and record evidence of six men indicate the founder of the haplogroup is an ancestor of Robert Montgomery. Robert was born about 1125 in Renfrewshire, Scotland and died in 1180 in Scotland, the son of Philip Montgomery born about 1102 in Pembroke, Wales. His descendants include the Lords of Montgomerie and the 1st-5th Earls of Eglinton.[1][3] It is disputed by prominent historians Geoffrey Wallis Steuart Barrow and Bruce McAndrew whether proof exists that Robert is related to Anglo-Norman Arnulf de Montgomerie 1066-1122 who built a castle in Pembroke, Wales. The project is seeking DNA evidence to confirm or deny the potential relationship. So far, no known descendants of the Anglo-Norman de Montgomerie line are known to have taken a Y DNA test.

Surnames: The Haplogroup has 2 surnames associated with it: Montgomery and Gilbert. The Montgomery men have the branch Z35783, dated about 1300 with a 99% Confidence level he was born between 1055-1490.[4] So far, there at least 6 men with documented lineages to Robert and his father Philip Montgomerie b ~1102 Wales who have the Z35783 branch of J-Z35794 Haplogroup. The Gilbert men have the branch FTC81425 dated about 1350 with a 99% Confidence level he was born between 862-1704.[5] They are presumed to be descendants of Richard Gilbert b ~1550 of Yardley in Worcestershire, England.

Testers and Branches: As of 1 Oct 2024 there are 94 Big Y DNA testers with the J-Z35794 Haplogroup. Of that, 90 Big Y testers are in the Montgomery branch and 4 are in the Gilbert branch. A total of 53 branches have been identified. As more Montgomery and Gilbert men upgrade or take the Big Y, more branches are likely to be identified, providing further clarity to the relationships.

Common Mutations: There are 17 common mutations shared by the Montgomery and Gilbert branches of J-Z35794. Further Big Y testing of living Montgomery and Gilbert men with the J-M172 haplogroup will help determine whether the Gilbert men are cousins or descendants of Philip Montgomery and his son Robert. If descendants with a clean line of descent from Roger de Montgomery of Normandy test and have the haplogroup, we can discover whether the haplogroup originated outside of Wales and Scotland.

Project Goal: The 'Montgomery of Scotland' Founder Project for Haplogroup J-Z35794 has the goal of identifying the founder of all 53 branches by documenting confirmed lineages using record and DNA evidence. When that's not possible we are identifying the Earliest Known Ancestors of each branch.

Founded ~1300 (99% confidence 1039-1493 CE)[4]

Earliest known ancestor: Philip Montgomerie 1102-1177 born in Pembrokeshire, Wales who died in Scotland. There is no record evidence for Philip's father despite speculation he is a descendant of Arnulf Montgomery of Pembroke, Wales.

Earliest Possible Founder: Alexander Montgomery 1305-1388 b Renfrewshire, Scotland, father of John Montgomerie of Eaglesham who married Elizabeth, only daughter and heiress of Sir Hugh Eglinton.

Most Recent Possible Founder John Montgomerie of Ardrossan 1632-1429 of Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland is the most recent common ancestor of the Teal, Red, and Yellow and Green Groups who have Benchmark testers.

The 'Montgomery of Scotland' DNA project welcomes men and women who descend from Montgomerys of Scotland. Autosomal and Y DNA in combination with GEDmatch tools and WikiTree are providing the evidence to confirm the descendants of J-Z35794 and their relationships to each other.

The goal of the project is to identify the Earliest Known Ancestor and Founder of J-Z35794 and each of its branches and document confirmed lineages using record and DNA evidence.
