Laura Ella Crews was born in Illinois where her family stayed for a few years before continuing the journey ever Westwards. My two times great grand aunt, never married. She lived the balance of her very long life in Enid, Oklahoma. Aunt Laura's house was like a mansion! Laura's house had been a nursing home not far from downtown Enid. It was purchased and remodeled with money from oil leases on the land she had staked a claim on during the land rush of 1869. Aunt Laura rode a horse astride during the opening of the Cherokee Strip to any settler willing to stake a claim, live there and do improvements. Those were years doing plenty of hard labor! So the money from oil revenues was a reward well earned. Over the years, Aunt Laura was a regular donor to local projects and charities. She traveled many places and extensively worked on her books of family history, recipes, and genealogy. Laura Ella Crews gave us each a signed copy of her book; "My kinsfolk : a story and genealogy of the Crews, Sampson, Wilber, and Waddel families" The book is available in its entirety at: <https:www.ancestry.com> As well as searchable, the stories are interesting. So my great great grand aunt, Laura Ella Crews was the first family genealogist I knew in person.
