1684
[6th April 1884 Sunday]
Arrived in Sydney 12.20
6/4/84. Met Griffiths
went with him to
Preddy Hotel - no
room for both, so I
went to the Coffee
Palace in Geoge St &
had dinner & engaged
& pd for a Bedroom 2/-
so as to have to have a place to
leave my traps in
on being shown the
room, it was most
horribly & stinking
that I decided not
to sleep in it. On
going into town, I
met Alick Hamilton
who gave me his

mothers a/d. When I
took a tram out to
the Glebe & after some
trouble I at length
found the house but
to my annoyance, no
one was at home, so
I returned to Sydney, &
to my surprise I
met Mrs. Hamilton
who insisted upon
my returning to tea
which I did shortly
afterwards - but in
the meantime I visited
the Baumans, who
made me extremely

welcome & insisted
upon my making
their house my home
while in Sydney. I
promised to on
return from
Hamiltons to stay
all night, which
I did. I had a
good bedroom, but
oh, the mosquitos
I was dreadfully
tired& yet never
slept a wink
tho I had been travelling
in the train from
Melb all the
previous night.

Wednesday [23rd April 1884]
I went to Neutral
Bay & had an hours
Saunter, about the
hills & returned. Saw
the “Iberia” come in.
On landing I went
& had lunch & a
good look about the
wharves & the old p[ar]t
of Sydney. Called
at Hamiltons office
Met several gentlemen
there - who were

going home with
him to dine & spend
the evening together
with their wives
& families. I left
them for a hour
& walked to
Wooloomooloo &
found out Mr &
Mrs Clark, who
have taken a
large house at 163

house. I returned
to Sydney & called
at Hamiltons Office
& accompanied him
to his house & spent
the evening & night
Mrs H[amilton] made me
very comfortable.
[24th April 1884, Thursday] Next morning I came to town & went to Googi [(Coogie)] Bay returned to Sydney & got a steamer & went to Paramatta. Returned to Sydney by rail. Went for

an hour to hear
the Minstrels, left
about 9.30 & went
to Baumans &
slept there - next
morning knocked
about town & left
Sydney at 2.15 pm
on an excursion to
the Hawksbury River
Starting from Circular
Quay, I went to Manly
took coach from there
for about 14 miles to
“Pitt water” where we

the latter formerly sang
with me at a choir
in St Kilda.
Pitt Water is a lovely
spot beautifully situated
a few miles from the
Mouth of the Hawks-
-bury river. After an
early breakfast, 6.15
we left by a
comfortable little
steamer called the “Flora” & steamed
away between high
rocky mountains
until reaching the

mouth of the river
at Barrenjoy lighthouse
from there to
where we staid
for dinner at
Wisemans Ferry
the River turned &
twisted about
around points &
between high headlands
here & there, might
be seen little cots[?cottages]
but so little land
is available for
cultivation that

I am afraid little
is, or ever will be
made out of the
district - the river is
a fine broad
noble one & is
one of the most
picturesque in the
world - if it had
the historical
associations of the
Rhone or Rhine
neither could equal
it. After leaving

(which is an old
penal settlement)
we pushed up to
where we landed
‘Clarence Reach’ at
4pm, where a
coach awaited us
& conveyed us to
Windsor, over a
beautiful fertile
country - covered
with large farms
It was 6pm when
we arrived at W[indsor]
& after tea, we
left there by the

train at 7pm &
came to Sydney
where we arrived at
9-pm, the trip being
one of pleasentest
I ever enjoyed.

cost 30/-, apart
from expenses of
meals etc.
