BAIN family home at 15 Newcastle Road
In the early 1920s, Edwin Robert Bain (1893-1969) opened a general store on Newcastle Road outside the village of Drumaness. Newcastle Road was the main road connecting Belfast to Newcastle via Ballynahinch. The BAIN store was located at 15 Newcastle Road on premises that were once an old coach inn. It was here that Eddie and Rachel Bain raised their family. Rachel, a talented seamstress and embroiderer, would also operate a fabrics counter as part of the main store. Together they ran the store for about 40 years.
