The USS Bryant (DD-665) , on patrol in the Pacific Theater during World War II, was on radar screen duty just off the coast of Okinawa in April of 1945. She was on her way to Kerama Retto for resupply when the USS Laffey (DD-724) came under attack and required assistance.

When the Bryant returned they were attacked by six enemy planes. One of the "Zeke" fighters made it through their guns and the suicide fighter crashed into Bryant just below the bridge near the main radio room. Fires and explosions lead to human casualties of 34 dead and 33 wounded.[1]
