Regiment Information
See the main page for the 16th Regiment United States Colored Infantry for more information about the regiment.
Company Information
Company G began recruiting enlisted men in December 1863. The first enlistees were mainly former enslaved people from the contraband camp next to Clarksville, Tennessee. Throughout the war, the ranks would continue to be filled by men from other parts of the country, especially Ohio. The men who enlisted in Tennessee typically signed a contract for three years, necessitating their service until the regiment mustered out in April 1866; by contrast, those who enlisted in Ohio usually did so for only one year, and many completed their service and left for home before the final mustering out.
A total of 4 officers and 143 enlisted men served in Company G between November 1863 and April 1866.
No officers, in any of the 16th's companies, died on active service.
Of the 143 enlisted men who served in Company G, 58 (41%) mustered out with the regiment on 30 April 1866, and 24 (17%) completed a shorter term of service.
40 men died of disease on active service, a staggering 28% of the entire company. Only 2 men were transferred from the company to the Invalid Corps due to serious physical debility, and it is unknown if they died after the transfer.
13 men deserted Company G, comprising 9% of the entire company.
For a full account of each enlisted man's fate, including those not mentioned above, see the "Discharge Reason" column in the tables below.
Company Officers
Company G was the only company in the 16th USCI that did not even nominally have a commanding captain until 1865. 1st Lieutenant Charles W. Seidel was placed in acting command from the outset, and in March 1865 he was promoted and remained in his position.
For a time, Seidel's only fellow officer at the company was 2nd Lieutenant Bent D. C. Rowland, who was assigned to Company G from the beginning. Lieutenant Rowland, however, submitted a letter of resignation in November 1864, citing "poor health." In reality, the lieutenant was in trouble; as Colonel Gaw put it in a letter to the Headquarters at Chattanooga, "Lieut. Rowland tenders his resignation under the following charges upon which he would have been brought to trial as soon as convenient. He is charged with having got drunk on the night of the 31st of October 1864 and while so drunk said, 'God damn the Officer of the Guard,' and did announce the watchword or countersign, for that night, it being the No. 25, loud enough to be heard all over camp." The response from Major General H.W. Halleck sounds like something a senior officer might write today: "Accept resignation as shortest way of getting rid of him." Rowland was thus allowed to resign rather than be put through a trial.

Roster of Enlisted Men
Names in bold are connected to the Global Family Tree.
The Age column refers to the given age at time of enlistment.
"ETS" in the Discharge Reason column stands for "expiration of term of service." Some soldiers only enlisted for a one-year term and were therefore discharged before the unit mustered out.

Young | Richard | Wagoner | 26 | Maryland, Frederick County | 1/18/1864 | Tennessee, Clarksville | 8/1/1865 | Died from wounds |
Notes for Q - Z:
Young, Richard: His file states only that he died from a "gunshot wound to the chest." This happened after the war was over, so the shooting did not occur in active combat. It is unclear if this was an accidental shooting death; a suicide; or (less likely) a murder.
