Regiment Information
See the main page for the 16th Regiment United States Colored Infantry for more information about the regiment.
Company Information
Company K was the very last company to form as part of the 16th. It began recruiting enlisted men in February 1864. The first enlistees were mainly former enslaved people from the contraband camp next to Clarksville, Tennessee. Throughout the war, the ranks would continue to be filled by men from other parts of the country, especially Ohio. The men who enlisted in Tennessee typically signed a contract for three years, necessitating their service until the regiment mustered out in April 1866; by contrast, those who enlisted in Ohio usually did so for only one year, and many completed their service and left for home before the final mustering out.
A total of 6 officers and 141 enlisted men served in Company K between December 1863 and April 1866.
No officers, in any of the 16th's companies, died on active service.
Of the 141 enlisted men who served in Company K, 57 (40%) mustered out with the regiment on 30 April 1866, and 26 (18%) completed a shorter term of service.
34 men died of disease on active service, about 24% of the entire company (almost one out of every four men). An additional 5 men were transferred from the company to the Invalid Corps due to serious physical debility, and it is unknown if they died after the transfer.
13 men deserted, or about 9.2% of the total company. This gives Company K the highest desertion rate out of all the companies of the 16th, several points higher than the regimental average of 5.75%.
For a full account of each enlisted man's fate, including those not mentioned above, see the "Discharge Reason" column in the tables below.
Company Officers
Company K was commanded by a variety of officers at different times. From its muster in February 1864, 2nd Lieutenant Peter Gordon was acting commander, until the arrival of Captain James L. Passel in April. Captain Passel was frequently away from the company on detached service, however, leaving another lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant Joseph H. Barbour, to step up. Finally, Jeremiah Chauncy was promoted from staff adjutant to Captain and traded company command responsibilities with Captain Passel from late 1865 to the mustering out in April 1866; the former spent some of that time on detached duty at the military prison in Chattanooga, and the latter on a court martial detail. It is not always clear from the records who exactly was in command at which time, but this company does not appear to have suffered from the same lack of total officers as other companies in the 16th (like Company C). Still, the revolving door of commanders, and the shifting of command responsibilities to junior officers, may have contributed to the climate which caused Company K to have the highest desertion rate in the 16th.

Roster of Enlisted Men
Names in bold are connected to the Global Family Tree.
The Age column refers to the given age at time of enlistment.
"ETS" in the Discharge Reason column stands for "expiration of term of service." Some soldiers only enlisted for a one-year term and were therefore discharged before the unit mustered out.

Notes for L - P:
Poindexter, Henry: His first index card contains a very odd remark: "Deserter. Left train without permission while the Regiment was being transported from Chattanooga Tenn to Nashville Tenn at Murfreesboro Tenn Dec 11 '64. Was afterwards seen at Mill Creek Bridge with 44th U.S.C.T. same day. Supposed to have been killed or captured in fight at said Bridge." The fight referred to here is part of the "Battle of Nashville," in which both the 16th and the 44th took part. Poindexter's name is not on the 44th muster rolls (but it wouldn't be, if he joined just to participate more actively in a single battle, and was killed or captured immediately). More research is required.
