Introduction
Barrington was originally part of Swansea in Plymouth Colony, later part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1747, parts of the Province were ceded to Rhode Island, including a piece of Barrington that was subsumed into the town of Warren -- Barrington was not at that time a "town" in Rhode Island. Barrington was set off as a town distinct from Warren in 1770, just four years before the census in 1774. But this Barrington was a different region than the town originally incorporated from Swansea in 1711. This changing of names, boundaries, and governing colonies can cause confusion in searching for pertinent genealogical records. Bicknell gives a good summary of the details of these changes.[1]
The 1774 census is a particularly important record for Barrington because the Barrington records of the 1782 census of Rhode Island were lost. The original 1774 census pages have been digitally imaged, and the pages are very easy to read. So these images are the official source for the Barrington census records adopted by this project. The system unfortunately does not have a "forward" and "back" button to move directly between consecutive pages (at least, as far as this writer can see in January 2025). So here are direct links to the various pages:
The following are transcriptions of the Barrington census pages, along with links to the corresponding profiles. The first column gives the name of the head-of-household exactly as it is written in Annie Austin's transcription. The next twelve columns provide the distribution of household members into different categories, with only counts of people in each category. The twelve categories are, in order:
- white males above 16
- white males under 16
- white females above 16
- white females under 16
- Indian males above 16
- Indian males under 16
- Indian females above 16
- Indian females under 16
- black males above 16
- black males under 16
- black females above 16
- black females under 16
The final column gives a link to the profile of the head-of-household, when available, and otherwise shows the individual's name in red.

Slavery in the census
Most likely some people categorized as Indian or black in the census were slaves and others were free -- the census did not distinguish. Bicknell provides information about some of the enslaved people of Barrington,[2]<but unfortunately did not provide dates, so it is difficult to identify the people he describes within the census records.
