Introduction

Warren was originally part of Swansea in Plymouth Colony, later part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1747, parts of the Province were ceded to Rhode Island, including the newly formed town of Warren. In 1770, just four years before the census, Barrington was split off from Warren as a separate town. This changing of names, boundaries, and governing colonies can cause confusion in searching for pertinent genealogical records.

The original 1774 census pages from 1774 have not been digitally imaged (or at least, such images are not online), so the official source for the Warren census records adopted by this project is the transcription of Annie Austin published in the March 2007 issue of Rhode Island Roots.[1] (Note: this transcription is on the American Ancestors website, but can be accessed free of charge by registering for a guest account.)

The following are transcriptions of the Warren census pages, along with links to the corresponding profiles.

Warning: some of the classifications and terminology used is anywhere from innapropriate to offensive by modern standards. To preserve historical accuracy, the original terms are presented as they were in the original census documents.

The first column gives the name of the head-of-household exactly as it is written in Annie Austin's transcription. The next twelve columns provide the distribution of household members into different categories, with only counts of people in each category. The twelve categories are, in order:

  1. white males above 16
  2. white males under 16
  3. white females above 16
  4. white females under 16
  5. Indian males above 16
  6. Indian males under 16
  7. Indian females above 16
  8. Indian females under 16
  9. black males above 16
  10. black males under 16
  11. black females above 16
  12. black females under 16

The final column gives a link to the profile of the head-of-household, when available, and otherwise shows the individual's name in red.

The Warren census was not alphabetized, meaning that groupings of neighboring families can sometimes be evidence of familial links between the families.
