Location: Greene County, Pre-Statehood Tennessee
The area that is now Greene County, Tennessee was part of North Carolina in 1783. Being territory west of the Appalachian Mountains, it was hard for the North Carolina legislature to govern the area, so settlements created their own counties and militias to have order. The counties soon started collecting taxes to pay for local services. Listed below is the first Greene County Tax list taken in 1783.
