I have in my possession the “Passengers Contract Ticket” that brought the Farrish family from Scotland in 1851. This ticket came into my possession through Gavin Green who operated The Old Curiosity Shop in Goderich, and was one of my most treasured pieces. There were 15 in the party; including 13 Farrish family members.
The names on the boat ticket included: John Farrish, 67, Annie Farrish, 67, Barbara Farrish, 34, Robert Farrish, 30, Anne Farrish, 24, Isabella Farrish, 28, David Farrish, 26, John Farrish, 24, William Farrish, 19, Matthew Farrish, 26, Margaret Farrish, 12, my grandfather David Farrish, 10, John Farrish, 23 and William Ferguson, 28 & Allen Murray, 30.
They came on a ship (I presume a sailing vessel) by the name of Shannon from Liverpool, England on June 2nd, 1851 – 1500 ton registry for New York. The cost for the group was 50 pounds, 7 shillings & 6 pence. This was steerage or second class rates.
Each passenger was allowed 10 cubic feet of luggage space & 3 quarts of water daily, 2.5 pounds of bread or biscuits not inferior to navy biscuits, 1 pound wheaten flour, 5 pounds oatmeal, 2 pounds rice, half pound of sugar, half pound of molasses, 2 ounces of tea per week & 5 pounds of good potatoes which may, at the discretion of the master of the ship, be substituted for 1 pound of oatmeal or rice. Oatmeal may be substituted in equal quantities for the whole or any part of the issue of rice. All of this was supplied to each passenger but they were to take other provisions they wished for themselves.
