Background
List of Abandoned Plantations Edisto Island, Charleston County, South Carolina (ca. 1965)
During the Civil War many of the plantation owners moved further inland. Before the end of the Civil War the army told the plantation owners who were still on Edisto Island to vacate their properties.
After the war was over the owners of these plantations slowly returned. However because they had been slaveholders they had to take and oath of allegiance, and if they wanted their property returned they had to file an application for return of property. The following owners of these plantations likely had applications filled out for return of their property by 1866.[1]
