1870 Census

This census had columns for family name and forename, position in household, sex, exact birthdate, marital status (cohabitating or not -- for spouses, divorced or separated, widow/er, or single), Heimatsgemeinde (home municipality) and Heimatskanton/Land (home canton or country), length of time residing in the census place, denomination (Catholic, Protestant, other Christian, or non-Christian), and trade or occupation and position (for those over 15), and whether in the employ or service of others. In most cases, the home municipality was given as Ried, the denomination was Catholic, and the profession was field worker or helper. We give below then only name, household position, and birthdate unless another piece of information deviates from the norm.

Some images are followed by the second page of the census document, which included a "Part B" to list people who were temporarily absent from the household. They are denoted with (TA) below.

The order of the households is the order of the digitized images in the 1870 census, which do not seem to correspond to the page numbers or household numbers written on the census pages.
