Mapping the Lees, Caldwells, Weisiger and Welshes of Boyle County

This is a project Karen Lee is working on.

In researching enslaved ancestors who's enslavers were known, and discovering that some declared marriages in the period 1865-1870, I realized that though not legally married, those who declared marriage after emancipation, had been engaged in marriage-like relationships, but were often living on neighboring plantations.

This work is an attempt to find the enslaver of the spouse whose location before emancipation is unknown. In particular I am seeking the location of Patsy Caldwell and George Welsh, who married people who had been enslaved by Lee slave owners.

This is a holding page for this research, as I hope to return to it.

If you are looking for something to do -- make profiles for the slave owners listed below, and please put me on the trusted list, and shoot me an email.

Thanks,

Karen

An 1876 map of Boyle and Mercer Counties, published in Philadelphia by D.G. Beers & Co., 1876, [1] can provide clues to the locations of neighboring slave owners who enslaved people that formed unions during slavery, and after emancipation formalized their marriages. For instanceJacob Lee (abt.1820-bef.1890) enslaved by George Theodore Lee (abt.1792-1879) had children with Patsey (Caldwell) Lee (abt.1835-aft.1880) who I believe was enslaved by one of the several neighbors of George Theodore Lee with the last name of Caldwell. Later they formalized their marriage, and had many children and grandchildren. They have living descendants.

I printed the map at scale and began mapping the locations of the slave holding families I am studying, the Lee, Weisiger, Caldwell and Welsh families. I started to also locate their neighbors with last names, that were the names of enslaved people who later married people enslaved by these people, and begin researching their records.

There are several weaknesses to this approach.

  1. Enslaved people may or may not have adopted the last name of their enslavers after emancipation. Sometimes they did, sometimes they did not.
  2. the map was produced in 1876, and by then some of the former slave owners had sold or lost their land and moved elsewhere. For instance Nelson Thomson Lee had moved on to Louisville and later Missouri and Arkansas. Joseph Weisiger had departed for Texas. Research would be needed to identify who owned their properties after they left, and then the approximate location of their properties, which may have had vague geographical descriptions related to features no longer present -- ie starting at the large hickory tree near (a named) creek.
  3. the images and names of the lots owned that are printed on the map and are small. The 5 by 6 foot map on my wall requires the use of a magnifying glass and a headlamp for me to find anything.

Purpose: Looking at the Caldwells, Lees, Weisigers and Welshes of Boyle County by location. Mapping relationships, building Caldwell Family Trees. Finding the slaves of said families.
