Purpose

Update Feb 2023 - the census is now searchable on FamilySearch. Anyone is still welcome to update this page with their findings if they wish!

The purpose of this page is to begin an index, by page and street name, of the 1897 Odessa Census. Helpful links are at the bottom of the page.

There is currently no index for the census. FamilySearch states, "Without a record index, the best advice for researchers is to identify an address or area of the city where ancestors lived at the time of the Census and start browsing records in that area".[1]

I’m primarily looking for 3 family names- Kessler, Katkow, Levine, and Zaslowsky. But I figured it would be good to start a page where other people can add information and translations they have found (additional space pages can be added if this one gets too long). There are other professional translation attempts in progress, completion dates are unknown. [2] [3]This is a page where any WikiTreer can add what they have found.

Census Questions

The census included: family name, given name, patronymic, sex, relation to householder, age, marital status, social estate, place of birth, place of registration, place of residence, notice of absence, faith, mother language, literacy, occupation, secondary occupation, military status, mental illnesses and disabilities, address. [4]

Section 1

The text on the can later be organized into groups or districts; for now I will just start at the top of the FamilySearch page, which begins at number 28.[5]

I will attempt to give one family name per document group, and with more details if one of the 3 family names I am interested in are present. Anyone else, feel free to add more!
