The 1912 Summer Games - The V Olympiad Stockholm

The 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden were the last games that awarded first-place medals made of pure gold. Later summer games gold medals have exactly 6 grams on 24-carat gilding over silver.

It was the first time that automatic timing devices were used during track and field as well as the photo finish.

There were no boxing events because Swedish law at the time prohibited the sport.

Notables include:

  • Hannes Kolehmainen from Finland was the winner of 3 gold and 1 silver medals in Athletics.
  • Jim Thorpe from USA was the Penthalon winner.
  • G. Vilhelm Carlberg from Sweden won the most medals during the games with 3 gold and 2 silver in Shooting.
  • Edith Margaret Hannam from Great Britain won 2 gold medals in Tennis.
  • Harold Hardwick was from the Australia/New Zealand team that won the 4x200m freestyle relay with world record-breaking speeds. He also won bronze medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle. Later in life, he won the Australian heavyweight title in boxing in 1915.
