Introduction to the Winter Olympics
In 1921, the International Olympic Committee planned a Winter Sports Week to take place in 1924 in Chamonix, France. This event was a great success, attracting 10,004 paying spectators, and was retrospectively named the First Olympic Winter Games.[1]
Notables include:
- Charles Henry Jewtraw (1900-1996) - The first person to ever win a winter olympics gold medal. He was an American who competed in 500m Speed Skating.
- Clas Thunberg from Finland took home 5 medals.
- Canadian Ice Hockey Team - they scored 122 goals! Only three were scored against them.
- American Anders Olsen Haugen (1888-1984) obtained his bronze medal in 1974 after an appeal was made to Olympic officials about a marking error.
- Scots William Kilgour Jackson (1871-1955) and his son Laurence Fee Jackson (1901-) were both gold medalists in the Curling event - could this be a unique combination?.

Alpinism
Mixed Team
Participants in the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. The gold medal in this event was awarded to the participants in the 1922 Mount Everest expedition. Led by Brigadier Charles Bruce , it had set out to climb the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, on the Chinese-Nepali border. In three attempts, the expedition failed to reach the summit, and on the third attempt seven Sherpas died in an avalanche. In his speech, Pierre de Coubertin explained why the medal had been awarded to the expedition:
“For the first time a gold medal is awarded for alpinism, and it is awarded to the glorious expedition to the Mount Everest. Not content with having almost succeeded, they are preparing a renewed effort to finish the ascent..." [2]
