Introduction
October 4 - October 7 — the start of Family History Month — is our fourth annual "Source-a-Thon"!
This three-day event is for a good cause (sourced genealogy!), there will be thousands of dollars worth of door prizes donated from around the genealogy community, and it will be lots of fun.
The marathon starts Friday, October 4 at 8 AM (ET) and ends Monday, October 7, 8 AM (ET) but you don't need to participate the whole time (!). If you can join for any of it, please post an ANSWER below saying either the team you'd like to be on (see the team list) or your genealogical interests or geographic location and we'll assign a team before the start of the event. This is our fourth annual 72-hour sourcing marathon. The previous three Source-a-Thons have been great fun and very productive. In 2016 we added sources to over 22,000 profiles. In 2017 we had almost 500 participants and added sources to over 53,000 profiles. In 2018 we sourced over 72,000 profiles! Join us this year to beat that record! The goal of the event is to clear out the Unsourced Profiles category on WikiTree. Although including sources is in our community's Honor Code, inexperienced genealogists don't always record them. Sometimes the source is "Aunt Mabel." This doesn't mean the information isn't worth preserving or sharing. It's a starting point — information waiting to be confirmed. Like a marathon, this is a competition, but most participants won't be serious competitors. Most of us will be doing it for the challenge of sourcing as many profiles as they can, for the mission, and for the fun of it

How to Participate
- Choose a profile. It does NOT need to be a Tennessee profile.
- Add a good source. For more information on sources, see our Sources page.
- Once a valid source is placed on the profile, remove the {{Unsourced}} template or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]] categorization, if there are any.
- Click the "Challenge Tracker" button at the very top of the page and choose the "Source-a-Thon" option.
- Move on to the next profile! Here's a handy video to help you out if you need a visual
Tip: To prevent upset colleagues, for profiles part of or managed (and sometimes PPP't) by multiple Projects or projects other then Tennessee Project, it's best to just add the source you found in a post to the profile and leave it to a project member to add it to the Bio.
Adding Sources and Counting Sourced Profiles
Participating means removing profiles from the Unsourced Profiles category. They cannot be new profiles that you create. Select an Open (white) profile from anywhere in the category or one of its subcategories and search for sources to back up the facts of the person's life. Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. A source cannot be another user-generated family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree. If you find a valid source: Edit the profile to add the source, according to our Sources guide.
Remove theSave the profile and click the Challenge Tracker button. On the Challenge Tracker, select the Source-a-Thon checkbox. Visit the Source-a-Thon Instruction Video for a step-by-step walkthrough of these instructions. If you don't find a source after searching, please add a Research Notes section to the profile. Say where you have looked and sign your comment with four tildes (Barnett-3517 03:01, 3 September 2019 (UTC)) so it is dated. For example: "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry." This way the next researcher knows where to start. For more details: Do you know how to participate in the Source-a-Thon? Challenge Tracker makes it easy. What profiles count as "unsourced" for the Source-a-Thon?
Communication
During the event, we will use the Team Tennessee Chat thread for all team communications. You can also use the https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/691162/do-you-have-source-a-thon-questions if you have questions.
The Tables Are Ready!
Click one of the following links to reach a table of Unsourced profiles prepared from the database for Tennessee. You can also use the Unsourced categories to find profiles that need sources, but the tables reached through the links below have a lot more information than the Category pages show.
Whether you source a profile you found through the table or a category page, when you save the profile, there will be a button for "Challenge Tracker" at the top of the page. Click that, complete the form (add your WikiTree ID if needed, check the appropriate challenge, and describe your action), then click the "Add" button & the profile will automatically be counted toward your total in the challenge you selected.[1]
