"Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H Crute, Jr contains no history for this unit.
- This Company was known at various times as Captian Dickinson's Company, Engineer Troops; Lieutenant Haney's, Engineer Troops; Company C, 1st Battalion, Engineer Troops, and Company---, 4th Regiment Engineer Troops, C. S. A.
- The 1st Battalion, Engineer Troops, was organized in the Trans-Mississippi Department in early 1864. It appears to have increased to a regiment about April 1865 and designated the 4th Regiment Engineer Troops, C. S. A.
- The Confederate Army Corps of Engineers was established on March 16, 1861. Most of its members were from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. The 4* was assigned to the Western Trans-Mississippi Theaters and operated along the Mississippi River's western bank. The Field and Company officers were primarily Civil Engineers by profession. WW. Blackford described the men as 25 to 35 years old, mostly married, and skilled in using tools. They were miners, sailors, carpenters, blacksmiths, masons, and almost every trade. Engineer duties were mapping and topography, with constant reconnaissance, location of defense positions, supervision of construction, sapping, mining operations, river and channel obstructions, building corduroy roads, signaling, guiding troops in battle, scouting, filled in as line officers when needed, constructed fortifications and made maps. Engineers were technicians and specialists. Diversity was their trademark. 'Essayons' (Let Us Try) was the rule. From ice procurement to ballooning, fortifications to boat building, mapping to fighting, the Confederate Engineers managed to do almost every job given to them.
- Special Order of which the following is an extract: Head Quarters Dist. of Arkansas, Camp Bragg, Oct. 31, 1863. Special Order No. 198. II. The following named men are transferred to. Capt. Dickerson's Company, Engineer Troops, to take effect from Ist November 1863. * By command of Lieut. Gen. Holmes. J. F. BeloN, Lieut. Col. de Asst. Adjt. Genl.
