Regiment Information

The 5th US Colored Infantry Regiment was originally formed as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. See regiment's main page for more information.

Company Information

Company H was mustered in on 23 Jul 1863 at Camp Delaware, Ohio. They mustered out on 20 Sep 1865 in Carolina City, North Carolina. There were a number of men who had enlisted for a term of one year in 1864 and they were mustered out in late Aug 1865 in North Carolina, just a few weeks before the rest of the company was mustered out.

11 men from Company H died while serving.

• 4 died of battle wounds: Sergeants Jacob A. Moss and Lafayette Tibbs and Privates David B. Brown and Henry Winslow
• 6 were killed in action: 1st Lieutenant Edwin R. Smith and Privates Brown Bailey, Enoch Burgess, Isaac Cook, Andrew J. Rusk, and Perry Wyatt
• 1 was killed accidentally: Edmond Hawkins
• 15 others died while serving (likely of diesease)

There were also 10 discharged on surgeon's certificates of disability and one who was in the hospital with battle wounds at the time that the company mustered out.

The roster below is based on the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866, Volume I, pages 615-618.

In the "Discharge Reason" column, KIA means Killed In Action, ETS means they mustered out at the End of their Term of Service (mostly men who had enlisted for a period of 1 year), OWD means discharged on Order of War Department, and SCD means discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.
