Deaths while in the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry (US Civil War)

Introduction

Based on careful examination of the regimental records, 190 men died while they were in the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry.

The numbers are surprisingly hard to determine.

In some cases, records are simply wrong. Stephen Kelly (E), for example, was surprised to discover his grave when he was attending a GAR encampment in Gettysburg. Presumably a body was found with an item marked with his name, perhaps his canteen, which he did lose during the battle. (See 'Decorates his own grave'. Rocky Mountain News (Denver CO), 30 June 1886 page 8 column C; 'A man twice dead', Weekly Register-Call (Central City CO), 15 February 1889 (issue 35), column F; 'He's dead sure now', The North American (Philadelphia PA), 4 February 1889, column B.)

In other cases, information didn't reach the regiment. Consider, for example, Jacob Appel (K), who is borne on the regimental records as having died as a prisoner in Andersonville Prison. When the 62nd Pennsylvania was mustered out as a regiment, men who weren't eligible for discharge were transferred to the 91st Pennsylvania. Appel was transferred with the others on 21 July 1864. But he had actually died on 12 May 1864. The 91st's company descriptive book reports his death without a date. Should he be counted as having died while in the 91st?

In one case, the Fifth Corps actually revoked someone's discharge, so that he was officially in the regiment when he died. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he was an officer. Horace Faust, captain of company D, died on 18 December 1863, two days after he was discharged because of disability. The Army seems not to have done that for any of the enlisted men who died after discharge (or for Captain James Sulger), including these:

Charles McIlvain (H)
Adam Cooker (D)
James Sulger (C)
John Walton (D)
Christian Lawrence (G)
Robert Simpson (A)
James Maguire (I)
Roberts, William (H)
Edward Ogden (D)
Todd, James Allen (I)
John Haines (I)
Johnson, John (B)
Whistler, George (K)
Charles A Wieland (K)
David Bachtel (F)
Hugh Mullen (E)
Simon C Shannon (F)
Charles A Wieland (K)
David Bachtel (F)
Nesbit Hanlon (I) (who died six days after discharge)
Stufft, Michael (G) (Bates History of Pennsylvania volunteers seems to have missed this discharge, and reports him as dying while in the regiment)
James Williams (E)
William J Johnston (B) died after having been dropped as a deserter, but his grave has a GAR plaque, which may hint that he was discharged honorably.

Other men who had served in the 91st were still in the Army, but had been transferred, most to the Veterans' Reserve Corp (Martin Blake, James P Lewis, Frederick Lehman, and William Carpenter). Alvin Clark died while in “his own” 27th Massachusetts (after serving briefly in the 91st), and Henry G Mathers died while in the 90th Pennsylvania, having been drafted after he was discharged from the 91st.

On 28 February 1865, the regiment reported "Conrad" (co.F) died in action or of wounds received in action; he has not yet been identified.

This list follows regimental records in including Faust and Appel, but not Kelly, Hanlon, or the people discharged or transferred before their death. So this list is subject to revision.
