Colored People Cemetery also known as A.C. Dunlap Memorial Cemetery is located off Highway 80 and East Olliff St. in Statesboro, Georgia. It was called ‘The Colored People Cemetery' because it was behind the White Eastside Cemetery which was founded in 1903.
There were no cemeteries to properly bury Black folks without going to country Churches. The local Ancestors of African Heritage of Statesboro, Georgia purchased the plots of land and those founding volunteers maintained the cemetery. When the land was first obtained senior citizens purchased plots for their families. If you could not purchase your plots in full, an option to pay on the plots a little at a time until paid in full. Plots were sold for $5.00 to $10.00. Records were kept because the plots were sold with the understanding that the purchasers would keep record of where their families were buried.
