Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is artificial intelligence capable of generating text, images, videos, or other data.[1]
Examples of Generative AI models are:
- ChatGPT
- Google Bard
- Microsoft's Bing
Some examples of ways you can use AI to help your genealogy:
- Transcribing documents
- Correcting grammar
- Helping you format source citations
- Giving you ideas on where to research next
AI can be a useful tool, but there are some potential issues it can cause.
Generating Text
Generative AI can write long narratives about a person or subject.
Even if the narrative seems accurate, AI can hallucinate and give you false information and even false source citations. Since generative AIs trained on text from the internet, some of the responses may also be plagiarized or copied from those texts.
WikiTree already has a policy against copying large amounts of text from other sources. Because of the above reasons, this policy includes text generated by AI.
If you do copy part of a response from AI, make sure you put it in quotes and include the name of the AI in your source.
Generating Images
When you upload an image, you are required to enter the source of the image. If your image has been generated by AI, make sure you clearly state that in the source statement.
You should not upload fake documents or headstone pictures that were generated by AI.
