Abigail, from England to Virginia
The Abigail, Capt. Samuel Each, Master, left London on 21 February 1621 and landed at Jamestown in June 1621.[1]
- "Virginia Company. A Note of the Shipping, Men, and Provisions Sent and Provided for Virginia.... The Abigail, of 350 tons, sent in February 1620/1 with 230 persons... Men skillful for setting up staple comodities... Eight French Vignerons [vineyard growers], procured from Languedoc, who are very skillful also in breeding silkworms and making silk--of this seed there is good store gone, both French, Italian and Spanish--together with instructions for providing comodious housing and orderly planting of mulberry trees. There are also some Englishmen sent that have been trained therein." ~ Kingsbury, pp 239-240[2][3]
The 1624/5 Jamestown muster has multiple dates associated with her arrival, from 1620 to 1622, most likely due to her February 1620/21 sailing date. Prior to 1752, the new year officially started in March, leading to "old/new style" dating that continues to give genealogists headaches.[4][5]
The list of people on this page derives primarily from the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster,[6][7] providing a "compiled" list, rather than from an original passenger list, which may have shown family groups and maiden names that are lost when compiling the information from the muster.
The compiled passenger list that follows was consolidated from multiple lists collected from several different (now deleted) categories. Wikis being wikis, things change, and unique content is no longer recommended for category pages. The Abigail had another problem, in that the 230 passengers who boarded her in England in February 1620 (1620/21) were splintered into multiple lists, sailing 1620, 1621, and 1622, no doubt based on the arrival year given in the 1624/5 Jamestown muster. These are the date notations by the passengers' names. Duplicate categories had existed for those without a date, annotated as 1620-22 below but shown as passengers on an "Unknown Voyage" or a "before 1624" sailing. WikiTree now has one category (Category: Abigail, sailed 1620-1622) and one passenger list, as follows, for the 1621 voyage to Virginia of the Abigail. The title of both this page and the corresponding category page uses 1620-1622 because of the confusion caused by its February sailing date.[4]

- ↑ Part of what inspired both this page and the Wine and Silk and the Virginia Company page was trying to piece together Peter's family. As mentioned, compiled passenger lists lose family groupings and maiden names that original passenger lists offer, and the passengers for the sailing(s) of the Abigail are apparently compiled solely from the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster, which has four Arundells (of various spellings): John, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Richard. Peter is listed as dead, 1624. In a FamilySearch tree, the entries for Peter have records for several baptisms attached (see MMPZ-WMM and M3BP-6PG). Two have been confirmed against an image of the register (John, baptized 17 April 1603 & Joane born 5 February 1611/12 - see this G2G discussion); Margaret's matches the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster, which says she's 9. Others:
- Elizabeth, born 29 Nov 1600/christened 7 Dec 1600
- Elizabeth, born 14 Dec 1609/christened 21 Dec 1609
- Richard, born 7 Sep 1613/christened 12 Sep 1613

- The "Massacre of 1622" is followed in December by an epidemic brought by the ship Abigail. It kills twice as many people as died in the Massacre and the colony's population is reduced to about five hundred."

- Joan (Hottens) Hampton (1596-): "William paid the passage to Virginia for his wife, Joan, and their three children (William Jr, Grace, and Elizabeth) arriving on 1621 on the ship Abigail." Comments on her profile include this one from Joy Harrison: "Ancestry.com shows that E. Joanne Hotten married Robert Samuel Wade after Rev. Hampton. I don't have access to the English records that are cited."
- Elizabeth Joeanne (Wade) Hampton (1596-1628): "William had as many as 4 Wifes." (both profiles show marriage in England in 1614).
- Hampton-2062: William Hampton Jr (abt.1616-) (attached as son of Hampton-299 and Hottens-1).
- Joan Arundell (abt.1602-1678) (attached as wife of Humfrey Kent).
- Hampton-299: William Hampton Sr (abt.1592-abt.1652). Profiles attached as wives:
- ↑ There is just one William & Joan each listed as Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestors:
- Hampton, William - A3404; baptized 28 May 1592 Middlesex Co., England, died ca. 1652, Gloucester Co.: (Muster of 1624/5).
- Hampton, Joane ( ) - A9530; born ca. 1600; Gloucester: (Muster of 1624/5), wife of William Hampton.
- ↑ In the 1624/5 muster, William Hampton (40) m Joan (25) arrived aboard the Bona Nova (1620) and the Abigail (1621), respectively. Additionally, William Hampton (34) arrived aboard the Bona Nova (1621); his wife Joan is listed with him in the muster, along with John Arundell, but no more information about Joan is included in the 1624/5 muster. Perhaps the two William Hamptons were cousins & they were aboard the same sailing of the Bona Nova. We'll call the 40-year-old William "Sr" & the 34-year-old William "Jr" and speculate: Being in the same community as the Arundells, they became friends. John Arundell's sister Joan (who might still have been wife of the dead-before-December-1621 Capt Mansell) married one of the cousins - the older one. After Peter's death & by the time of the 1624/5 Muster, that William and Joan were under the muster of Edward Waters, but the younger cousin had a homestead with his wife Joan & John was living with them. (A young-ish couple with no servants could probably use an extra set of hands!) That speculation matches John Arundell with the Joan Hampton who arrived in the same ship, but we really don't know if he had a sister named Joan. It also does not explain why Margaret wound up in the Kent household, when Humfrey apparently has no connection to the wine/silk industries attempted at Buckroe Settlement & his wife Joan is shown in the muster as having come to Jamestown aboard one of the bride ships - the Tyger.
And maybe not. This site says that the Abigail departed London on 21 Feb 1621 and landed at Jamestown in June 1621, with Joan [Hampton] & her 3 children aboard. (Source: "A History of the Hampton Family of the Southern States,1586-1916"...) - ↑ That Humfrey's wife Joan was Peter Arundell's daughter is based on Margaret Arundell living with them after Peter's death. Collaborating sources are needed. Another candidate for Peter's daughter Joan (if he had a daughter named Joan) would be the wife of William Hampton. This had been ruled out when we only knew of the one William Hampton & wife Joan, but the muster has two sets of William Hampton & wife Joan. As noted in another footnote, the 40-year-old William's wife Joan (25) arrived in the Abigail.
- ↑ Both Humfrey and Joane are Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestors:
- Kent, Humfrey - A9681; born ca. 1602, died by 1653; (Muster of 1624/5).
- Kent, Joane ( ) - was listed in the Muster of 1624/5 - wife of Humfrey Kent.
- ↑ Had been 1620; Hotten has 1622 (page 223).
- ↑ Two William Hampton/Joane Hampton entries:
- William (40, in Bona Nova, 1620) and Joane (25, in Abigail, 1621) are listed under the muster of Edward Waters.
- William (34, in the Bona Nova, 1621) and Joane (no additional info), with John Arndell under "William Hampton his MUSTER" (just before entry for "Anthonie Bonall his MUSTER")
- ↑ Probably his wife, and the "vx Hanie" listed at Bucke Row in the 1623/4 muster.
- ↑ Hotten, page 248
- ↑ The online muster shows him as being at the Maine. Kingsbury's The Records of the Virginia Company, volume III, page 464, has a letter from John Rowe, who apparently arrived in July 1621, saying that he was staying at "Paspehayes with my sonn in law John Smyth". Probably a different John Smith, but thought I'd note it.
