Settlement of the area, originally known as Wolf Hills for the animals that prowled about, began about a decade before the Revolution. Originally in Botetourt County, then Fincastle County, Abingdon (called Black's Fort until 1778) became the county seat of Washington County when that county was formed in 1776. The town was named for Martha Washington's ancestral town in England.
