About the Towns Name Study Coordinator, Karen Herndon
I have been researching my family genealogy since 2014 and I am seriously addicted to finding and connecting all of the family puzzles together. I work on research almost every day. Both of my family lines, Ivey and Towns, have a dead end where there is no definite knowledge of when or where they originally migrated from. It is my hope that I can make a connection to a "cousin" somewhere that can provide that one small clue to bring it all together.
Personal Goals
1. To connect my grandfather, Arthur Jackson Towns, to Governor George Washington Bonaparte Towns. The family story is that my grandfather claimed he was Governor Towns' first cousin, but as of yet I do not have proof of this link.
2. To prove/disprove that my family line is related to William Towne, who came to America on or about 1630 and settled in Salem, MA. According to the book (pages 333-334) The descendants of William Towne, who came to America on or about 1630 and settled in Salem, Mass., my Towns line is not from this "William Towne" family line. The book does not provide any information on the Towns family member who may have immigrated to America.
About the Towns Family from Telfair County, Georgia
It has not been established who the TOWNS immigrant was to North America, and where they came from.
It is believed that Gideon Towns (1790-1860) may have been born in 1787 in Elbert County, Georgia (there is a conflicting record that he may have been born abt 1790 in North Carolina). Census records show residences in Wilkes County, Lincoln County, Houston County, and finally Telfair County in 1850.
Johnson C. Towns (1819-1905), son of Gideon Towns, was born in Lincoln County, and settled in the unincorporated town of Towns, Georgia. According to the book, The descendants of William Towne, who came to America on or about 1630 and settled in Salem, Mass.,[1] Johnson Towns was one of the original settlers of the town and it was named after him. It also states that he was the Postmaster there for years.
My great-grandfather is Elisha E. Towns (1852-1927), son of Johnson C. Towns.
