Achill Civil Parish

Irish or Alternate Name: Acaill.
Barony: Burrishoole
Province: Connacht

Introduction

Achill is a civil parish, an island (see below) and an electoral district in the barony of Burrishoole in County Mayo.

Achill Island

Achill Island
Achill Island (/'æk?l/; Irish: Acaill, Oileán Acla) in County Mayo is the largest island off the coast of Ireland, and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. Its area is 148 km2 (57 sq mi). Achill is attached to the mainland by Michael Davitt Bridge, between the villages of Gob an Choire (Achill Sound) and Poll Raithní (Polranny). A bridge was first completed here in 1887, replaced by another structure in 1949, and subsequently replaced with the current bridge which was completed in 2008. Other centres of population include the villages of Keel, Dooagh, Dumha Éige (Dooega), Dún Ibhir (Dooniver), The Valley and Dugort.

Early human settlements are believed to have been established on Achill around 3000 BC. A paddle dating from this period was found at the crannóg near Dookinella. The island is 87% peat bog. The parish of Achill also includes the Curraun peninsula.

Some of the people of Curraun consider themselves Achill people, and most natives of Achill refer to this area as being "in Achill". There are between 500-600 native Irish speakers in Achill parish.

The Townlands of Achill Civil Parish

The townlands in Achill Parish (Acaill) are those taken from Achill Parish on Logainm.ie and validated against townlands on the 1851, 1871 and 1901 Lists of Towns and Townlands and Griffiths valuations data. A link is provided in the notes for the 1901 and 1911 census. Please note that these may not always work if the townland was not available on the census in question. The census site may also substitute a similar name so be prepared for unexpected results!

If the townland has a category it will be linked in the table below. If there is no link and you need the category please contact David to get the category created or put in a request for the category to be created. Alternatively, if you feel condifent to do so, see Townland Category Information Boxes below for how to create them yourself.

Notes

Excluded ‘Townlands'

Islands or Archipelagos that are not really ‘townlands' and/or may never have been inhabited.
  • Dooagh - Dubh-Achadh or Dumh-Acha, 'sand banks' as referred to by historical texts. Neither Townlands or Griffiths count it as a townland
  • Illanroe An tOileán Rua. One of several islands in Furnace lough that go by that name.
