Rescue Efforts
The Alabama Fuel & Iron Company, owners of the mines, made arrangements for the embalming of all bodies and a proper burial for all dead. The list of dead follows: Ed Bragg, Joe Bushvarine, H.I. Childress, Will Clelland, J.C. Cook, Charlie Collum, J.A. Horton, J.B. Horton, William Holsomback, Burry Kittrell, J.W. Langston, Charles Meionas, L.L. Patterson, J.W. Perkins, M.A. Perkins, Lee Walerton and eight negroes.
Results and Findings
An explosion occurred at this mine as a result of two or more blown out shots from very badly placed holes, probably charged with black powder. Of the 29 men in the mine, 24 were killed, 13 by injury or burns, and 11 by asphyxiation. USBM Final Investigation Report, pdf
