What Educators Help With

  • Adoption Angels have created help pages, videos, and resource pages to inform and assist applicants. Those items need to be maintained. Educators maintain these items.
  • Provide guided training on WikiTree and DNA topics offered to the applicant. These are normally short sessions or videos targeted to the applicant’s specific need, such as creating a WikiTree sandbox, or using the WATO tool at DNApainter.com, etc.
  • Work with Mentors to provide knowledge to the applicant. While a Mentor works with the applicant on the process, the Educator provides training on topics.
  • Provide training to new Angels when requested.
  • Make recommendations for updating existing help pages.
  • Make recommendations for new help pages for either Adoptees or Angels.
  • When recommendations are approved, create and/or update help pages.
  • Create posts on g2g related to adoption, family finding, or other topics of interest.
  • Guide applicants (usually in g2g) and Angels through training by answering questions, explaining difficult concepts, or suggesting further training. This goes beyond what Mentors do by answering quick questions in g2g to actually teaching on a topic that would help someone in their search for family.
  • Research training topics within WikiTree and at external sites. Provide updated links to information and training opportunities on those topics.

Preparing to be an Educator

  • First read the Adoption Angels Mission Statement so you are familiar with what Angels do and do not do.
  • Read the Adoption Angels Welcome Mat for general instructions.
  • Follow the "Adoption_Angels" and "Adoption" tags on your personal profile. You may wish to consider other tags such as "DNA." This will give you notifications when people create posts in g2g with these tags.
  • Become familiar with all roles Angels fulfill. Know when to refer the applicant to another role if you do not yet have those skills.
  • It helps if Educators possess skills in some of these areas:
    • Teaching or training, especially one on one
    • Vizio or other decision tree software
    • Preparing documentation and writing steps
    • Giving presentations from prepared materials
    • Guiding video-based training
    • Researching existing training materials
  • Learn as much as possible about using DNA to find family and the tools available to assist in these searches.
    • Become familiar with DNA Basics for Adoptees.
    • A few tools to consider are: DNA Painter, Genetic Affairs, Gedmatch
    • Consider free DNA webinars at Legacy Webinars or low cost online courses in DNA concepts available at DNAadoption.org.
  • Learn how to use Microsoft Excel, Google Spreadsheets, or other open-source spreadsheet software.
  • If you need additional help, ask an experienced Educator to let you shadow them before you strike out on your own.
  • Know when to ask for help. No one is an expert on everything. We have a community of Angels, many of which have expertise in multiple roles.
