Surnames/tags: Adrain Adrian Drain
Hello,
I would like to welcome descendants of the Adrain family to our one name study group. Please come & help us organize this effort. My focus presently is the Adrain families from the Irish provinces in Ulster particularly the County Antrim area; also the Adrain families that migrated to America, particularly Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. We are also looking to find the migration pattern from this particular family group. Please contact the project leader Kim Myers or post a comment to the right. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks!
About the Project
The Adrain Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Adrain name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Adrain name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Adrain), by time period (18th Century Adrains), or by topic (Adrain DNA, Adrain Occupations, Adrain Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.
Also see the related surnames and surname variants.
How to Join
To join the Adrain Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!
If a research page does not yet exist for your particular area of interest, please contact the Name Study Coordinator: Kim Myers for assistance.

Adrian Name Origin
English, southern French, and German: from a vernacular form of the Latin personal name (H)adrianus, originally an ethnic name denoting someone from the coast of the Adriatic (Latin Adria). It was adopted as a cognomen by the emperor who ruled ad 117–138. It was also borne by several minor saints, in particular an early martyr at Nicomedia (died c.304), the patron saint of soldiers and butchers. There was an English St. Adrian (died 710), born in North Africa; he was abbot of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, and his cult enjoyed a brief vogue after the discovery of his supposed remains in 1091. Later, the name was adopted by several popes, including the only pope of English birth, Nicholas Breakspear, who reigned as Adrian IV (1154–59).

Names in Ireland
The O’Dreains chiefs of Calraidhe in Co. Roscommon, and erenaghs of Ardcarne, near Boyle, but were dispossessed in the 13th or 14th century by the MacDermotts. They appear to have removed to Co. Antrim, which is the only place where the name is found in the 16th century.

Goals
- This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.
- Document and correctly connect all Adrain lines on Wikitree
- Add Adrain DNA results to help confirm connections
- Create a meaningful bio for each profile so that it represents a person's life
- Develop a reference library specifically for Adrain genealogy research
What You Can Do?
- Add the category or template Adrain to all of the Adrain profiles which you manage. [If you add the template it will automatically add the category.]
- Make sure the Adrain profiles that you manage have good sources and a biography
- Ask questions in G2G if you need genealogy help
- Post comments in the boxes on this page to share Adrain Genealogy information
- Link Adrain Space Pages to this Project Page.
- If you are interested in a new “Adrain” category [e.g. Adrain from a particular location, etc.] let your leader know.
Tasks
If you've put up all of the Adrains in your family (or at least all the ones you've found so far), and are looking for something else to do, here are some tasks that you might be willing to help with:
- Biographies:
- We need to make sure that each Adrain on WikiTree has a narrative biography containing all the genealogically relevant facts about them (birth, marriage, and death at the very least). For information on biographies, see the Biographies help page.
- Categories:
- We need to make sure that each Adrain on WikiTree has the appropriate categories applied to their profile. For information on categories, see the Categorization help page and the Categorization Project.
- Subcategories:
- Need to create subcategory for state regions etc
- Coats of Arms:
- It would be great if we could find (or create) well-rendered, but public domain, images of the various Adrain coats of arms listed in Burke's General Armory, to add to the profiles of those people who have the right to bear each of them.
- Progress: not started
- It would be great if we could find (or create) well-rendered, but public domain, images of the various Adrain coats of arms listed in Burke's General Armory, to add to the profiles of those people who have the right to bear each of them.
- Connecting:
- We need to connect all the Unconnected Adrain profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Connectors Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.
- Progress: profiles = %
- We need to connect all the Unconnected Adrain profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Connectors Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.
- Merging:
- We need to merge any duplicate profiles for the same person into one profile for that person. For information on merging profiles, see the Merging help page.
- Sourcing:
- We need to have sources for all the profiles on WikiTree. Specifically, we need at least one (and preferably more) sources added for all the Unsourced Adraub profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Sourcerers Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on sourcing profiles, see the Sources help page and the Sourcerers Project.
