Return to Adenturers of Purse and Person
(Note: Not mentioned in book, as far as I can tell so far, is the meaning of the word CORNE. It was not the corn on cobs as we know today. It was any kernaled grain such as wheat, oats, or barley, or any cereal grain grown in the British Isles. The proper name for what we call corn today is Maize. Pease is that, those little green things as in "Pease porridge hot, Pease porridge cold". Pease is singular, peasen is plural. Also, Cattel, cattle could also mean horses and mules along with oxen and cows. Cattle or Chattle refers to Moveable property. Neet or Neat Cattle refers to horned animals. Cows, Oxen, possibly goats. Neetsfoot oil comes from oxen. Jester-173 16:23, 17 December 2016 (EST) )
page 3 THE Muster of the Inhabitants of Virginia was taken between 20 January and 7 February 1624/25 during the term of office of Governor Sir Francis Wyatt. The document is preserved in the State Papers of the British Public Record Officea The information contained therein was sought by the Royal government under King Charles I when decision had been reached to abrogate the Charter of the Virginia Company and bring the affairs of Virginia directly under control of the Crown.
When the Southampton arrived in Virginia, 4 March 1623/24, she brought a commission authorizing Captain John Harvey,b John Pory, Abraham Peirsey and Samuel Mathews "to make an exact information of the present state of the Plantation in divers points."c John Jefferson, not arrived, was also named. Harvey had received three shares of stock in the Virginia Company, 13 November 1620, had been assigned land by the Company, 3 July 1622, and received a commission, 9 July 1623, to transport passengers and goods to Virginia in his ship the Southamptond.
During his stay in the colony, Captain Harvey devoted himself to (p. 4) obtaining answers to questions given him.e He met with the bitter resentment of the colonists over the Royal decision and particularly over the demand that the colonists surrender their constitutional rights gained under the liberal policy of the Virginia Company. Nevertheless, the Virginia Assembly, before being dissolved, May 1624, "to enable the commissioners to take a view of the exact state of the colony, ordered that the several plantations should transport them from plantation to plantation as they should desire."f
When Captain Harvey left Virginia February or March 1625, he carried with him reports from the plantations and replies to sundry questions which give a fairly approximate idea as to the condition of the colony. Among the questions were:g "how many several plantations there be public and private? what people, men, women and children be in each plantation? what houses? what cattle? etc.? what corn? what fortifications? what arms etc.? what boats?'"h
a See C 72; a photostatic copy of the original muster is deposited in the Archives of the Virginia State Library. (Abbrev. page xxvii Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series 1574-1660 ed. by W. Noel Sainsbury (1860).)
b Harvey was issued a patent for 6 1/2 acres, 12 January 1624, "within the precincts of James City 'for the more comoditie of his howses and building and the better conveniency of gardining and planting of sundry fruits and trees,' in the New Towne, adj. Mr. Georg Menefye and opposite Dr. Pott. Part of his first devident due for the trans, of John Simnell in the Southampton in 1624. Ground laid out by Willi. Clayborne." (CP 2 Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nell Marion Nugent. (1934). Abstracts of Virginia land patents and grants 1623-1666.). While in England he was knighted and as Sir John Harvey returned to Virginia as Governor, serving a first term from 24 March 1630 to 28 April 1635. During this sojourn he was in almost constant conflict with the leading men of the colony whose concern for the welfare of Virginia did not coincide with the Royal policies which Harvey endeavored to carry out. (See CLAIBORNE, MARTIAU, MATHEWS). In 1635 Sir John Harvey was expelled from the Colony and sent back to England. Several of those most active in the "rebellion" were summoned to England to answer for their part in the "Mutinye in Virginia" and were retained there for some months. Harvey was returned to Virginia as Governor, serving a second term from 18 Jan. 1637 to Nov. 1639. He married by 1638 (probably as his (2) wife) 2. Elizabeth Peirsey, daughter of Abraham Peirsey and widow of Richard Stephens. Sir John Harvey's will dated 15 Sept. 1646 was proved in England, 16 July 1650 with the notation that the testator "died beyond the seas" (P.C.C. 113 Pembroke, ref. in George Sherwood, American Colonists, 1st ser. 46, 2nd ser. 119). The will names "eldest daughter Ursilla" and "daughter Anne" and makes a bequest to "Symon Harvey my nephew, eldest son of my late brother Sir Simon Harvey, late of London."

h The answers to these questions constitute the MUSTER, which, although dated January-February 1624/25, probably was a final compilation and check on information gathered during the seven or eight months period following the dissolution of the Virginia Company. As in modern business, the closing out of an old form of management involves a careful inventory of assets before setting up new methods, just so, in the early 17th century an accounting was required of the assets of the Virginia Company as the Royal government assumed control. Hence, the MUSTER is a document pertinent both to the Company's administration in Virginia and to the termination of the authority of this private corporation originally composed largely of London merchants, who, in 1606, had been granted a Royal charter to establish a colony in the new world.

{*} Peeces are guns; however, the term peeces fixt was not generally in use in the early 17th century and is not interpreted today (1955) with any certainty. The guns so listed might be those converted from matchlocks to some faster and surer means of ignition such as that employed by 1640 in the flintlock. Apparently, between 1611 and 1625 there was a great deal of activity in remodeling these arms.

$This weapon probably derives its name from the word pistallo which means pommel, and not from Pistoja for it appears not to have been first made at Pistoja but at Perugia where they made small hand cannons a hand's span in length. (The Roman span is about 7 1/2 inches.)
The coup de poing, a small pistol, which the Germans called Terzerol was in use in the 16th century. The weapon with a wheel-lock and a barrel only 6 1/2 inches in length was made entirely of iron. This was preceded by the Monchsbuchse, a small hand cannon with a rasp. The revolver pistol, as well as revolver guns, existed in the 17th and 18th centuries and those made later, among which the Colt revolver was the most celebrated, could not be called inventions, but merely improvements of an old invention. See An Illustrated History of Arms and Armour by Auguste Demmin trans, by C. C. Black, M.A. (London; George Bell & Sons, 1901).

The snaphannce superseded the wheel-lock and fell upon a movable piece of steel, callel a frizel, which was placed vertically above the pan; hence, a firelock, a musket. The word and object were derived from Continental Europe.

*Newportes Newes, recorded as a settlement, 1619, (R, Va. Co. Ill 227) and later a fishing village, was incorporated as the City of Newport News, 1896. There is no authority for the alliterative name, of which there were several in the Colony, such as: Pace's Paines, Jordan's Journey, Beggar's Bush. Thus, tidings brought by Captain Christopher Newport in four voyages to Virginia subsequent to that which founded the settlement at Jamestown, 1607, probably supplied a basis for a euphonious designation of this early outpost at the confluence of the present Hampton Roads and the James River.
