Albemarle County was formed in 1744 from the western portion of Goochland County, Virginia. Albemarle's county seat is Charlottesville, though the city is itself an independent city, a separate legal entity from the county.

Record Loss

All order books for Albemarle County (except the first order book) and many loose papers dated between 1748 and 1781 were destroyed by the British general Banastre Tarleton's raid on Charlottesville in 1781 during the Revolutionary War.[1][2][3]
