Resources for Fairfax County, Virginia and the Independent Cities of Falls Church and Fairfax

Fairfax County was formed in 1742 from the northernmost part of Prince William County (itself formed in 1731 of portions of Stafford County and King George County). In 1757, the northwestern two-thirds of Fairfax County became Loudoun County. In 1789, part of Fairfax County was ceded to the federal government to form Alexandria County, then part of the District of Columbia. (Alexandria County was returned to Virginia in 1846, reduced in size by the secession of the independent city of Alexandria in 1870, and renamed Arlington County in 1920. Families who once were recorded living in Fairfax County might later be recorded in Alexandria County, and then in the independent city of Alexandria, all without actually moving.) Fairfax County contains the independent cities of Falls Church (which became independent in 1948) and Fairfax (became independent in 1961). The independent city of Fairfax also serves as the county seat for Fairfax County.

Record Loss

Fairfax County is a "burned county" and is considered a catastrophic loss, with original wills and deeds as well as many other loose papers being destroyed during the Civil War. In addition, deed books for twenty-six of the fifty-six years between 1763 and 1819 are missing, and numerous pre–Civil War minute books are missing as well.[1][2][3]
