Settlements of Freed Slaves

  • Lambert Lands (Morgan Township): The "Lambert Lands" is probably the most well known settlement of freed slaves in Gallia County. People enslaved by Charles Lambert of Bedford County, Virginia settled in Morgan Township in Gallia County around 1843 after his will freed them at his death in 1839.
  • Ward: Some of the people enslaved by John Ward Jr. in Pittsylvania County, Virginia settled in Gallia County after his will freed them at his death in 1829.
  • Anderson (Huntington Township): People enslaved by Henry Anderson of Amelia County, Virginia settled in Huntington Township in Gallia County (likely in the Shiloh community) after he manumitted them in 1847-1848.
