Introduction

This page is dedicated to Convicts with African ancestry from Mauritius and South Africa who were transported to Australia. These convicts were not transported up to England and then out to Australia but straight to Van Diemen's Land, and then some of them, from there over to New South Wales. (see routes on map above)

Some of those transported from Mauritius may also have French ancestry eg Maria Simonette Notes on their appearance were used as evidence of their African ancestry. An example is that of Edouard Rose

The table reproduced below, shows that between '1811 and 1848, 97% of slaves exported from Mauritius were from Africa. [2]
