African Ancestry Project

This space is dedicated to convicts with African ancestry who were convicted and transported from Barbados to Van Diemens Land and the colony of New South Wales in the first half of the19th century. Due to the historical development of colonial Barbados a few of the profiles within this page may also include people with joint Irish and African Ancestry.

As can be seen on the profiles, all of these convicts had descriptors such as "black" (complexion), "man of colour", and/or "hair black and woolly". They were all convicted in the colony of Barbados, British West Indies. All of the sentences extended were for a term of transportation.
