Two years after Wilmington was laid out for development in 1733, King George II granted 640 acres of land to leatherworker Jonathan Ogden and his brother, a carpenter named Solomon Ogden. The land included the very spot where the oak stood. By then, the tree was 190 years old. But it stayed, and the Ogdens left.[1]
