All Saints' Graveyard, Wigan - Image courtesy of Ron Hunt (wiganworld Website) |
For anyone visiting All Saints' Church in Wigan today, there is little sign that the church had a graveyard, but burials were carried out around the church for centuries.
For those buried in All Saints' Church in Wigan, the phrase "Greater Manchester" would have had no meaning, they died and for the greater part, lived in Lancashire. The administrative authority which is now responsible for the area only came into being 70 years after the last burial.
By the turn of the 20th century the graveyard was in a very sorry state and the decision was taken to close it for burials, the last internment taking place in 1904. By 1911 the churchyard had been transformed into a garden. The burials still remain and most of the old headstones, too, were buried. The garden still belongs to the church but is maintained by the local council.

All Saints' Church
The date of the first foundation of a church on the site is lost in the mists of time. It may go back as far as Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), but its existence was established by 1199 when the first Rector was appointed. The present building is a rebuild dating from 1845-1850 of the church which stood on the site from around the later middle ages. Restoration has been carried out in 1898, 1947 and the latest work being completed in 2006.
