Introduction

Alpine Plantation was built for Nathaniel Welch, a native of Virginia, by Almarion Devalco Bell in 1858. Nathaniel Welch was born in Madison County, Virginia on 24 Nov 1814, the son of the Reverend Oliver Welch, a Baptist minister. Oliver Welch was a founder of the Alpine Baptist Church.

Slaves

In an 1844 Deed of Gift, Oliver Welch identified previous gifts of slaves to his children as well as identifying remainder of slaves to remain in his possession until his death, at which time the remainder were to be equally divided amongst his 5 children.[1]
