Information about the village of Altofts in North Yorkshire.

Altoft's own parish church, St Mary Magdalene, was built between 1873 & 1890, so it must have become a separate parish around then.[1]

Martin Frobisher, who gave his name to Frobisher Bay in Canada, was born in Altofts. The church contains a memorial window to 32 people and 53 horses killed in a coal dust explosion at the West Riding Colliery, which led to a better understanding of the dangers of coal dust and better safety standards.[1]
