British North America

The thirteen original colonies were usually listed in geographical order, from north to south. [1]

New England Colonies

1. Massachusetts [2]

1620 - settlement began in Plymouth Colony.

1628 - founding of Massachusetts Bay Colony. This was the beginning of large scale colonization.

1692-1776, Province of Massachusetts Bay. It included the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Plymouth Colony, the Province of Maine, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

Named for the Massachusett tribe, which once inhabited the area.

6 February 1788 admitted to the United States of America as the 6th state, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The capital is Boston.

Motto: Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem (Latin), By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.

2. New Hampshire [3]

1620, settlement began as small communities.

1629-1641, Province of New Hampshire was the territory between the Merrimack and Piscataqua rivers on the eastern coast of North America.

1641-1679, the communities were under the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

1680-1686, Province of New Hampshire.

1686-1689, area absorbed into the Dominion of New England.

1689, back to Massachusetts rule.

1692-1776, Province of New Hampshire.

21 June 1788, admitted to statehood.

Nickname: The Granite State.

Motto: Live Free or Die.

10. Virginia [4]

1607-1776, Colony of Virginia.

Also called Virginia Colony, Province of Virginia, Dominion and Colony of Virginia or His Majesty's Most Ancient Colloney and Dominion of Virginia.

1607 - Jamestown was its first settlement.

Tobacco was its first profitable export.

1775 - Before the Declaration of Independence it became the Commonwealth of Virginia, which is still its official name.

25 June 1788 admitted as the 10th state of the United States of America.

The official slogan: The Old Dominion.

Motto: Sic semper tyrannis, Thus Always to tyrants.

The original Virginia Colony encompassed modern day West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

11. North Carolina [5]

1663-1712 the Province of Carolina (with South Carolina).

1712-1776 Province of North Carolina.

The charter granted in 1663 was for land south of Virginia Colony and north of Spanish Florida.

1710-1722 the capital was Bath.

1722-1743 the Capital was Edenton.

1743-1770 the capital was Brunswick Town.

1770-1776 the capital was New Bern.

21 November 1789 admitted to the United States of America as North Carolina.

Nicknames: Old North State; Tar Heel State.

Motto(s): Esse quam videri, To be, rather than to seem. First in Flight.

Upon statehood, the western part of the state was ceded to the Federal Government to form part of the Northwest Territory and, later, Tennessee.

12. South Carolina [6]

1663 - 1712 the Province of Carolina (with North Carolina).

1712 - 1776 Province of South Carolina. Also South Carolina Colony.

Originally called Carolana after King Charles II of England.

1670 - Charles Towne was its first settlement.

It was planned as a Protestant Christian colony.

Admitted to the United States of America on 23 May 1788 as South Carolina.

On that date it was the eighth state to ratify the US Constitution.

Nicknamed The Palmetto State.

Motto(s): Dum spiro spero (Latin), While I Breathe I Hope. Animis Opibusque parati (Latin), Prepared in Mind and Resources.

The capital is Columbia.

13. Georgia [7]
