Appalachia Thon Team History

Appalachia Roots" was established in 2023 as a challenge team that works to improve and connect profiles associated within Appalachia regions in the U.S. and the locations they emigrated from. With the January 2025 CaT, we introduced the Appalachia Roots Researchers thon team.

Although our primary focus/research will be on the Appalachia Regions and all areas that people have emigrated from, you are always welcome to create and improve profiles in any area, worldwide. Membership in the Appalachia Project is not required to be on the Appalachia Thon Team.

The Captains for both 2025 Appalachia Teams are: Tabor (Hoff) Fisher, Mark Lemen, Erin (Soltysiak) Robertson, and Sandy Patak.

Appalachia Challenge Teams

We have two Thon Teams:

When you sign up for a Thon, please specify which Appalachia Thon Team you wish to be on.

Appalachia Roots is our more competitive and fast paced team.
Appalachia Roots Researchers is for those that prefer to work a bit slower, research longer, and/or new to the Thon experience. This team is also a great choice if you have limited time to spend on thon weekend but still wish to be a part of the fun.

IMPORTANT! If at the start of the Thon, on Friday, you can not access our Discord Channel, Appalachia Roots Thon Team Channel (which is separate from the Appalachia Project Channel), please leave a message on WikiTree's General Discord and ask to be added. You must mention our Thon Team name. If you have never requested to be on WikiTree's Main Discord Server, click on this invite to start the process.

Don't worry if you add a profile that is not in a defined "Appalachia" area. All profiles you add or source during a Thon counts towards your total and the Team's totals.

After Thon Cleanup

It is advised that you not remove yourself as the profile manager from the profiles you created during the Thon for at least two weeks.

Every week, a database error report is created. It will take two weeks to clear any profile errors from the Thon. For those in the US, the first Tuesday after the Thon (the day after the Thon ends), will have half of the database errors. The following Tuesday will have all the errors on profiles created during the Thon.

To check all the profiles you created during the Thon: Link to show all the Profiles you created during the Connect-A-Thon, January 2025.
You will have to change to your WikiTree ID. This list will not be available a few days after the Thon.

Once you have the list in WikiTree+, at the top, middle of your screen, click on the word "Suggestions" to find the errors on profiles you created during the Thon.

Glossary

These are common acronyms, initialisms, and terminology that we use on the Discord chat:

DD - Data Doctors (WikiTree Project)
FG - Find A Grave (website)
FS - FamilySearch (website)
FSP - Free Space Page. It can be a page about anything on WikiTree, but not for a specific person.
FTDNA - FamilyTreeDNA website for consumer DNA testing. Can refer to either the website itself, or their DNA tests, or both.
H&M - Hatfield & McCoy. Infamous family feud in Kentucky / West Virginia in the late 1800s. Subproject of Appalachia. It is NOT the Hennes & Mauritz clothing store from Sweden.
NMC - Non-Marital Children. A child born to parents who are not married, and might therefore have the mother's maiden surname. This used to be called a child "born out of wedlock", but that carried a certain social stigma to it. In modern times, it carries less of a social stigma.
NPE - Non-paternity Event. Used in genetics testing to indicate where a person's father listed on their birth certificate (birth certificate father or BCF) is not their biological father. Some people prefer to say that NPE stands for Non Parental Event, or even Not Parent Expected, which could mean either the father, or the mother, is different from biological (therefore, unexpected). But there are different mechanisms and implications when the father is unexpected, versus when the mother is unexpected, that don't always imply that they should be grouped together under the same label.
