Information about the Name: Applegate Name Study Origin

It has been said that all the Applegates in North America originate from one family that migrated from England via the Netherlands in the 1600s. That cannot be true. Since the 1600's there have been Several migrants to North America from England and other places. Some Applegates are not strictly European. I am sure that when brick walls are broken a lot of the former patriarchs will indeed join up to one of the colonial families, but definitely not all. While it will be interesting to see how many family lines we can come up with, I think it much more interesting to see how many lines we can narrow it down to.

Surname Variations

Applegadt, and Applegaite are a couple of my favorite spelling variations. Appleget may represent a separate family line, but for some Appleget and Applegate were for a time interchageable making it difficult to trace thier lineage. DNA is lending some support to the possiblity that some Applegates became Apple or Appel. Doppelgatz, Appleyard, Applewaite, and Applegarth are some of the other surnames that are often lumped together with Applegate. Surname references usually consider Applegate a Northern English variant of Applegarth even when they acknowledge that one means road and the other orchard. Some researchers trace back to the surname Apeliard (Appleyard) in Norfolkshire. In researching back that far you will find records for the elite minority, but records for the humble majority are rare. I am open to the possibility that even in Europe the Applegate surname is not representative of just one family line, given the flexibility surnames once had and that it is based on what could be a common street name. Although the etymology, language or meaning of surnames may be linked to other surnames is it not over-reaching to assume family relatedness. Below I've used WWII Army Enlistments to illistrate the vaiety of possible spelling variations that have survived and rough idea of number of people that have them.
