History
Ashburton Cemetery is a large cemetery located at the corner of Bremners Road and Seafield Road on the northern side of Ashburton township. There are separate areas for returned services personnel and children under 9 years of age. Ashburton Cemetery contains the official war graves of 11 men who served in the New Zealand forces during the First World War and who died before 1 September 1921.
A remembrance book is administered by Paterson's Funeral Services Ltd and there is a memorial garden for past stillborn children. It has two distinct areas: the older area containing traditional monumental style headstones and grave coverings, and the new lawn area with modern lower upright headstones. The cemetery also includes the historic sexton's building which was restored in 1994 by the Pakake Lions Club.
