Challenges for the Year of Family Connections 2022

2022 is the WikiTree Year of Family Connections. The Australia Project is participating in the activities this year by working on reducing the numbers of unlinked and unconnected profiles that we have. We'll be having monthly challenges as well, if you want to 'mix-it-up' and do some different activities.

This is the list of Unconnected ANZACs. There are 1198 ANZACS who are unconnected at the beginning of April. Can we connect any of these men and women who served Australia to the global tree?

There are also 5 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island heroes who are unconnected. It would be excellent if we could extend their families and hopefully connect them up.

Robert George Garner (1891-1937) - Connected
William Charles Westbury (abt.1878-1936) Connected
Norman Baird (1888-1970)
Charles Baird (1889-1966)
Clarence Cecil Atkinson (1915-1981) - Connected

This is some information provided by the Australian War Memorial on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ANZACs. There is information on the site about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men below. I don't think any of them are on WikiTree. It would be great to double check if they are there, add them if they aren't, and connect them up. Make sure not to cut and paste the biographical information from the AWM as that breaches copyright.

Albert Knight (1894-1973)
Alfred Hearps (1895-1916) Connected
Douglas Grant (abt.1885-1951)
Gilbert Williams (1892-)
Harry Thorpe (1886-1918)
Lawrence McKenzie (1887-)
Richard Martin
James Dickerson (1883-1915) Connected
Harry James Dickerson (1896-1969) Connected
Alfred Lovett and his family - Alfred Lovett (1880-1962) Connected
Walter Christopher George Saunders (1895-)
William Allan Irwin
William Punch (abt.1880-1917)
William Reginald Rawlings (1891-1918) Connected

Let's look after our Convicts!!

Add them! Connect them! Improve them!

1. Improve the profiles for convicts in your own family (adding categories and stickers, new sources, working on the biography).

2. Add more descendants to your own convict ancestors.

3. Add new convicts and connect them up.

4. Connect up existing convicts: Unconnected convicts. There were 904 unconnected convicts when at the beginning of March.

Many of the unconnected convicts may be quite hard to connect, so below are some suggested convicts to try to connect. Add your name beside any that you want to work on and mark as connected if you are successful. It's fine to just add some additional family even if you don't actually achieve connecting success!

Our Year-long challenge: Reducing the number of Australian Unconnected profiles:

Unconnected Profiles, Australia

NB. The numbers of unconnected or unlinked profiles for some colonies / states, particularly South Australia, may be inflated as the search results picks up profiles from other regions. We'll see if we can fix this up!

I was wondering whether the link to the Unconnected Anzacs (above) was broken as I am being directed to a blank page. I am hoping I will be able to connect at least one ANZAC family member who doesn't appear to have a profile.

Catherine, when the page comes up, you need to click on the blue button "Get profiles" on the left hand side of the page.
I did wonder about the South Australian list. Looks like it picks out the South from New South Wales and Australia = South Australia. Not easy to reduce numbers that way but I guess it all helps.

April Challenge

The Japanese transport ship, Montevideo Maru was sunk in 1942 with over 1000 POWs mainly Australians. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Montevideo_Maru_Sinking%2C_1942

Mark did a fantastic job creating the profiles but many of these men are not connected. If anyone has time to work on them.

I was disappointed to see the South Australian lists went up 942 and 636! Could that be because it is made up mostly of people from New South Wales? I thought I was getting somewhere in connecting them.

Hi Karyn, thank you for all your hard work. The numbers are definitely very rubbery, due to the problem of picking up the wrong locations in the searches. I'm really not sure why the SA numbers went up so much. But I'm presuming that despite all your effort it's problems with the data. Gillian

Thank you Gillian, I am going to work on any profile now under the South Australian list no matter where they are from! Hope that number goes down next month :)
