What is the Australian Cemetery Index?
The Australian Cemetery Index is a user-generated content website for cemetery and gravestone information in Australia. Members photograph gravestones and create inscription records.
Using Australian Cemetery Index as a Source
The Australian Cemetery Index is a valuable source for gravestone information but you cannot assume that all information on The Australian Cemetery Index is correct. It is all entered by users, like on WikiTree, and it may not be based on reliable sources.
Generally speaking, if there is a photo of the grave you can use the information on that gravestone with confidence. Even then, remember that:
- grave markers can be incorrect, especially for birth information.
- grave markers can be created and placed long after death by descendants.
- markers may be "cenotaphs" i.e. monuments to people buried elsewhere.
- inscription pages may misidentify the person whose gravestone it is.
If there is no photo be sure to investigate the original source before using any of the information on The Australian Cemetery Index.
Linking to the Australian Cemetery Index from WikiTree
There is a handy {{AustCemIndex}} "link template" for creating links to inscription pages. Here is how to use it.
Basic "see also" links
If the Australian Cemetery Index inscription is not being cited in a source citation, include it in a "See also" section below the sources, like this:
- == Sources ==
- <references />
- See also:
- * {{AustCemIndex|1234}}
This produces:
Australian Cemetery Index: inscription #1234
The number after the pipe (|) is the inscription number.
Finding the Inscription Number
The inscription number can be found:
- In the URL on The Australian Cemetery Index, called id={number} e.g.: https://austcemindex.com/inscription?id=1234
- On the page header for the Inscription Inscription 1234 - William White where the number is the inscription number.
Links in Source Citations
The Australian Cemetery Index does NOT provide a "source citation", unlike Trove or Find a Grave.
- NB: I have written to Australian Cemetery Index for their thoughts on what a source citation should look like.
Here is an example of link template usage in a complete source citation:
- {{AustCemIndex|1234}} accessed 4 Mar 2022.
The above will display like this:
- Australian Cemetery Index Inscription #1234 accessed 4 Mar 2022.
You might include a note in brackets with the citation if there are any limitations, e.g.:
- [Gravestone inscription is not legible.]
- [Gravestone does not include a middle name and only includes the years of birth and death.]
Links to family member inscriptions and other people
Wikitree does not compare data on the profile with the data on the Australian Cemetery Index, so a link to another profile's Australian Cemery Index should include a note in the reference to show that the inscription does not represent the profile on which it appears. e.g. this inscription does not represent Xxxxxx Y.
