- The Australian Light Horse was a dynamic mounted infantry force of the Australian Imperial Force of the First World War best known for its service in the Middle East. Light Horse regiments fought in the Gallipoli Campaign, dismounted as infantry due to the terrain and with the constituent regiments allocated to the AIF's Infantry Divisions. It was a truly ANZAC force with both Australians and New Zealanders involved. The Light Horse was known as the Desert Mounted Corps (sometimes called Desert Mounted Column) when it was deployed in the Middle East from 1916 to 1918. The Desert Mounted Corps was commanded admirably by Major General (later General) Harry Chauvel. The Desert Mounted Corps comprised the ANZAC Mounted Division and the Australian Mounted Division, which were divided into five Australian Brigades, each comprising three Light Horse Regiments, and the New Zealand Light Mounted Rifles:
- The Australian and New Zealand (ANZAC) Mounted Division was one of two divisions of the famous Light Horse, together forming the Desert Mounted Corps. The division was comprised of the 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade, 2nd Australian Light Horse Brigade and New Zealand Light Mounted Rifles. At times, it also comprised a British Yeomanry Brigade, Imperial Camel Corps Brigade and other British mounted brigades. Divisional commanders were Major General Harry Chauvel (1916-17) and Major General Edward Chaytor (1917-18).
- The Australian Mounted Division, together with the ANZAC Mounted Division, formed the Desert Mounted Corps (or Australian Light Horse) in the Middle East during The Great War. The division was comprised of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Light Horse Brigades. It was the Australian Mounted Division's 4th Brigade which made the famous charge at Beersheba in 1917. The Australian Mounted Division was commanded by British Army Major General Henry West Hodgson from 1917 to 1918.
