At 7 Jul 2023: From History of Norfolk Vol 1; Diss by Francis Blomefield : [11] Braham results: John Lancaster, Esq. of Brisingham, who married Elizabeth, daughter and coheiress of Sir John Braham of Braham Hall in Catiwade, in Suffolk, Knt. He by his last will, dated the 20th of Nov. 1469, willed to be buried in St. John's church, in Brisingham, leaving the manor to Elizabeth, his wife, for life, with the manor of Heywood Hall in Diss, and all the lands thereto belonging in Reydon. Shelfhanger, Fersfield, and Burston, all which John Lancaster, senior, his father, had settled on Sir Simon Felbrigge, Knt. Gibert Debenham, and other trustees, to the use of his will; and at the death of Elizabeth, the aforesaid premises were to descend to William, his eldest son, except Filby's tenement in Brisingham, and Roydon. John and Henry, his sons, were to have all his share in Boyton Hall manor, in Capel in Suffolk, with lands there, and several towns thereabouts; and after the death of Elizabeth his wife, and William his son, they were to have Filby's tenement, and his part of the manor of Braham Hall in Catiwade, to them and their heirs. Elizabeth lived till 1478, and then died seized of this, and of a tenement, and 14 acres held of Fersfield manor, called Rose's, and of the tenement Irland's in Fersfield and Brisingham, with all its services; and William Lancaster of Boyland Hall in Brisingham, was her son and heir. It seems she married one Cator for her second husband, for by that name she is found to die seized. This William first married Elizabeth, daughter and coheiress of William Notbeam of Suffolk, Esq. and after her death, to Eleanor, widow of Henry Noon of Shelfhanger, Esq. daughter of Derby of Cheshire, who survived him, and after married to Robert Wyngfield, Esq. whom she survived; and dying in 1500, was buried by Henry Noon, her first husband, in Shelf hanger chancel. By her he had no issue; by his first wife he had one daughter, named Benedicta, who married Edward Bolton, Esq. who had two sons, William Bolton of Boyland Hall, to whom he gave this manor, with Irland's and Rose's tenements, and all their rents and services in Fersfield, Brisingham, Raydon, and Shelf hanger, by will dated 15th July, 1528. To Thomas, his other son, he gave Heywood Hall manor in Diss, and Winfarthing, which went off with him, as in that manor at large. This William married Elizabeth, sister and heiress to William Curson of Carleton in Norfolk, clerk, etc.
Regarding first appearance of Braham in relation to marriage I can find talks of Arms of Bleuerhayssette, Knyght - Sir Thomas - 3. Hasset, Lowdon, Orton, and Keldon, quartered, impaling Braham, with a crescent. menntioned in the History of Norfolk Vol 1 Francis Blomefield[11] and states the ledger stone at the east end of Campsea Ash dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle Here lyeth Sir Thomas Bleuerhayssette, Knyght, which decessyd the ryii Dan of June, the Yere of our Lorde M yo rrri. and rrriii Yere of the Reigne of our Sobe raygne Lord Kyng Henry the viiith, whois Soule God Pardon.
Impalement[12] means the division of the shield into two equal parts by a straight line from the top to bottom. That method is used to show either the arms of husband and wife, the arms of the husband being in the dexter half, or certain types of official arms, as the arms of a bishop’s see impaled with his family arms, those of the see being in the dexter half. When dimidiated, the dexter half of the husband’s arms are placed to dexter and the sinister half of the wife’s arms are placed to sinister,
- Also mentioned at same church in ledger stone according to Blomefield History of Norfolk[11] On a marble three yards long, and a yard and half wide, is this on a brass plate: Here lyeth Dame Margaret Bleverhayset, Wedowe. late Wyf to Syr Thomas Bleverhayset off Frens, Knyght, Domghter to John Braham of Metheryngset, Esquyer, who had Yssue by the said Sur Thomas, two Sonnes, Thomas a Pryst, and John Bleverhayset of Bargham, by Beclys in Suff, and fyve Dowghters, that ys Elizabeth Fyrst married to Lyonell Lowth, after to Francis Clopton, Agnes married to Syr Antony Rows, Knyght, Anne married fyrst to George Duke, after to Peter Rede, Margaret fyrst married to John Gosnold, after to Antony Myngfyld, who dyed the rriii of Julye in the Yere of our Lorde, 1561.
The first coat is lost, but was Braham impaling Reydon.[11] denoting marriage of Reydon to that of Braham. (Armiger as in owner of Arms).
- Then at Vol I for Shropham Francis Blomefield mentions John Brame a monk of Thetford who history is extant in Bennet College Library at Cambridge [11] who says "
ATLEBURGH
This place without doubt hath been very famous in early times, as all authors, that speak of it, unanimously agree. If we may believe John Brame, a monk of Thetford, whose history is extant in Bennet College Library at Cambridge, it was some time not only a city, but the metropolis of all Norfolk, founded by Atlinge, then King of that province, in order to oppose Rond, King of Theodford, and by him fortified with a ditch, wall, four gates, and four towers; and from this Atlinge he would have it called Atlinge's Burgh, or Atleburgh;"Pg. 261 of Shropham Volume.
- Also;[11] and specifically related to biography of John Brame married to Johanna Johane Aldous mention of both at this church More towards the east, on the said wall, remains the impression of a brass effigies, and
inscription now lost, but in a MSS. (marked E. 26, fol. 23.) in Mr. Anstis's hands we have the following account: Platers's arms and Duke's: Orate pro animabus Willi Platers et Thomazin uroris suæ filiæ Duke [11]
- As also of this, now lost:
Orate pro Domina Johanna Braham, vidua ur: Johns: Braham de Lowdham, Armigeri. Braham impales Duke. So is this Johanna Duke m. to John Brame of de Lowdham ?[11] Pg. 130.
On a stone having the effigies of a woman in her winding sheet, bidding her beads: Hic iaret tumulata domina Johanna Braham, vidua ar Deo dirata olim uror Johannis Braham Armigeri que obiit rbiiio die Nobembris Ao Dni. Millimo CCCCC rir. cuius anime propicietur Deus, Amen.'
- Braham single, and again impaling Reydon. Reydon single.[11] Pg. 130.
On Nov 25 1606 [13]a ship carrying cargo cleared by customs attested to by Daniel Brame was confiscated on docking in Portugal "1606, November 25. From the Conde de Aguilar. As requested by the King of Spain he sends his comments on the complaints of English merchants and mariners, which were forwarded by Don Pedro de Cuniga, the Spanish Ambassador in London. The grievances and their authors are listed as follows: Daniel Breames complains that he has transported English kerseys to Lisbon for sale on many occasions, and that £500 worth of them has been seized by the officials of the King of Spain on the grounds that they were originally the product of Holland, despite evidence from the Customs House in London that the goods had been shipped there and customs duties paid for them. John Watts, "one of the 24 of London", complains that during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth he put to sea in a vessel called the Centaur with letters of reprisal. Off the coast of Portugal he took a ship as prize with cargoes of grain belonging to Spaniards, and worth £500 as witnessed by depositions made and sealed before the Court of Admiralty. But being sent to Lisbon the ship has been summarily sequestrated on the pretext that it was taken after the present King of England had come to the throne. George Hill and other mariners complain that having arrived in Lisbon in a ship with merchandise, the cargo was ordered by the Conde de Aguilar, commander of the forces in Portugal, to be deposited as suspect goods in the Casa de Confiscacion, despite the certificate of the London Customs House declaring it to be of English provenance. Soldiers were put on board the bark and the mariners closely questioned, and finally the goods were carried away. Later the servants of the Conde made their choice of the cargo and paid what they liked, insisting that the goods were contraband and had come from Holland. There follow papers relating to the case, including affidavits and depositions and other documents, of which one carries the endorsement: "Lisboa. El Conde de Aguilar a 25 de Novem. 1606. Answer to the complaint of Sir John Watts, Daniel Brames and George Hyll. Sentence passed against Watts, [Hyll] and Brames, they appeale at Madril, suertys are demanded, but they refuse to putt in any." Spanish and Portuguese. 12 pp. (206. 29.) T. de Franciseky to—."
- Also the same source as above reagrding this ship reads : section House of Lords Journal Volume 6: 3 April 1644 Journal of the House of Lords: Volume 6, 1643
of Parham. Brames & al. Petition, concerning Goods in a Ship stranded near Shoreham, belonging to Spaniards. Upon reading the Petition of Arnold Brames (related to Daniel Brames?).
- The history above relates as a follow on from this source on Sir John Braham d. 1420 who only had two daughters both called Margaret both died in their 30's never marrying with no issue as a result. [14]regarding Sir John Brame Politician of the Brahams of Brantham. BRAHAM (BRAME), Sir John (d.1420), of Brantham, Suff. Family and Education
s. and h. of Sir John Braham (d.1375) of Brantham by his w. Margery, wid. of Sir John Mounteney of Heywood in Diss, Norf. m. bef. May 1393, Joan ?née Spyce1 (d. 20 May 1431), wid. of Thomas Visdelou of Shotley, Suff., ?s.p. Kntd. bef. Mar. 1381. which states at the end of the bio that it is obscure what happened to the estates after Margaret deceased an answer to which can be provided by the former paragraphs above this following on from Lancaster family ...it says: He died in 1420.6 Shortly before his death, in February that year, he had put his landed holdings into the hands of trustees, who included Robert Tey* of Marks Tey, Essex, like him a former member of Richard II’s household. They were to ensure that Braham’s widow, Joan, would retain possession of his property for the rest of her life. Joan survived until 1431, when her heirs were found to be her two daughters, both of whom were named Margaret and aged well over 30. It seems likely that they were the offspring of Joan’s first marriage, to Thomas Visdelou, and that Braham himself had died without issue. The process by which some of his properties came later into the possession of John Lancaster II’s* son John (d. 1469/70), is now obscure.

John Brame of Campsea Ash Suffolk
- The will of John Brame - main profile for OT; father John Brame Senior who died in 1618 at Campsea Ash (Ash) , Suffolk. [24]
This line goes through marriage to the Dukes, the Blessingfords [25][26]
John Brame Esq. purchased the Manor of Ashe and Chantry Hall, (the manor house) from Theophillus Howard in the early 1600s. (Before his death in 1618) between 1600 and 1618. There is evidence that John, who married Rose Armiger of Campsea Ashe, was living in the village from 1590, when their son John was baptised at the church. This John, who inherited from his father, purchased the Manor of Valence, Blaxhall. When his son, also John, graduated as a barrister-in-law, his father conveyed ownership of this manor to him.
This son John married twice. His first wife, Mary nee Darnell died in childbirth in 1660. His second wife was Deborah nee Jacobs. She was niece of William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury. John and Deborah’s son and heir, married Jane Duke, daughter of Sir John Duke, Baronet. Their daughters Elizabeth and Jenny inherited from their father. However they did not marry and died in 1787 and 1788. (Their father, John, was killed in a duel by Capt. Tyrell in 1706.)
After several generations, the Ashe Manor House Chantry Hall and its state were purchased by John Revett, a relative of the Brame family through marriage.[27]

Manorial Lands
- Manorial Lands[163]
- Manor of Ash, [163] to which the advowson of Ash Church was attached, owned by Bidford and retained in the Norfolk family till Theophiles Howard – second Earl of Suffolk – sold it to Blaine. John Brame.
- Manor of Morehill Hall or Ashmoor [163]– owned in 1592 by Richard Wentworth. There was an auction Court of Chancery – between Glo[v]wers and Braumes [Brames] :[footnote: Glow [v]ers married into the Brames and are mentioned in the will of John Brame at this link BRAME-1.] According to Page, the Manor and Estate of Ash [163] and the Park House Estate was considered the Manor of Ash. However, it is worth mentioning that the Park House belongs to the Rendlesham Estate and not the High House.
- According to Cox, the Manor and Estate of Ash were held by Richard de Weyland (or Weylond). He bequeathed it to his sole daughter and heiress, Cecily, who married Bartholomew Lord Burghesse. Through the "Courtesy of England," Lord Burghesse enjoyed the property during his lifetime, after which it reverted back to Cecily's heirs. Lord Burghesse passed away in the 43rd year of Edward III, specifically in 1370. Richard de Weyland resided during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. However, it is also noted that Maud, Countess of Ulster, reportedly held the Manor of Ash in 1348. Apparently, there were multiple Manors in the Parish, and presently, there are at least four Manors associated with the High House Estate that appear to be connected to this Parish. Additionally, there are other Manors in Tunstall, Blaxhall, and elsewhere, such as the Manors of Ash, Ashmoor, Campsey with Haugh and Northlands, and Ash Bigotts.
&Page states that the Park House Estate was considered the Manor of Ash. However, it is worth mentioning that the Park House belongs to the Rendlesham Estate and not the High House. During the dissolution of the Campsey Abbey in 1536, the Manorial rights that belonged to the Abbey were granted to Sir William de Willoughby, who later became Lord Willoughby. In the middle of the 17th Century, John Braham, residing in what is currently referred to as the Park House, held lordship over one of the Manors. On the other hand, the Manor of Ashmoor Hall was held by William Glover, who resided in the High House. [Footnote: William Glover the father in law of John Brames child mentioned in will of likely son.
